Name: | Daidōji Tomoyo |
---|---|
Birthdate: | Sep 3 |
Tomoyo's History- Tomoyo Daidōji is a main character from CLAMP’s series CardCaptor Sakura. Her name means worldly wisdom, whereas her surname could mean temple of great moral principles, or main street temple. Even though she’s the best friend of the main protagonist Sakura Kinomoto, she’s also her second cousin; this also makes Toya, Sakura’s older brother Tomoyo’s second cousin as well. Once Tomoyo discovered that Sakura was a CardCaptor, she devoted herself to become Sakura’s primary assistant-designing battle costumes for her and videotaping every one of her adventures whenever possible-be they adventures concerning the cards themselves or otherwise. Tomoyo’s videotaping seems to be solely for her benefit however, as she can occasionally be found watching them in her room.
Tomoyo’s the daughter of the Daidōji Toy Company founder, Sonomi Daidōji. Sonomi and Sakura’s late mother Nadeshiko Kinomoto are first cousins, which is why Tomoyo, Sakura and Toya are second cousins. Tomoyo’s father doesn’t live with them in the Daidoji home and was only mentioned once. She’s accompanied by the Daidōji team of bodyguards-who are all females-to and from school and can use cell phones that her mother’s company has prototypes of. Those same cell phones are used by Tomoyo, Sakura and Kero during their adventures.
Tomoyo’s relationship concerning Sakura is clearly one of love and friendship. Tomoyo’s actions have shown that she deeply cares about Sakura, quite often to the point of obsession-though strangely enough, Sakura herself never caught on to that fact. The two of them met in the third grade when Sakura gave Tomoyo an eraser after the latter had forgotten her own. She used it once and hasn’t used it since. The eraser is now Tomoyo’s most precious possession, and it sparked the development of their friendship with each other: Sakura’s cheerful nature is countered by Tomoyo’s love and devotion.
Tomoyo has proclaimed her love for Sakura quite a number of times, though never directly. Since Sakura has had feelings for others-like Yukito or Syaoran Li-she never saw Tomoyo’s proclamation of her feelings beyond simple friendship, which she eagerly returned. Tomoyo has shared conversations with people besides Sakura that her feelings are on a level that is deeper than friendship which she hasn’t expressed. Regardless, Tomoyo has always stood by Sakura’s side no matter who she had feelings for; she even helped Sakura out when she had to decide where she stood with Syaoran, stating that “only you can know what is truly in your heart.”
Tomoyo has faithfully kept Sakura's secret of being the Cardcaptor and has covered for her in times of need. There seem to be times where Tomoyo's feelings for Sakura appear to borderline toward obsession-she'll talk about her hopes of Sakura wearing one of her handmade battle costumes, or on her desire and excitement to film Sakura's entire day with a title already picked out-and appear lost in her own world; when this happens it's usually in Sakura's presence, with the latter in total disbelief at what she has just heard.
Despite that, she is very optimistic toward the outcome of Sakura's battles, believing that she will be able to triumph over adversity no matter the challenge. That doesn't mean that she won't occasionally find herself worrying for her best friend's well-being when things have taken a turn for the worst. Not surprisingly it appears that Tomoyo's moments of shock and disbelief are only when she hasn't been able to film Sakura in the crowning moments of her battles, or was unable to film her at all. (Tomoyo’s television, shown in her room is literally a big glass screen! She states that it’s because Sakura’s exploits as a CardCaptor are ‘larger than life,’ much to Sakura’s dismay; Kero enjoys it.) Tomoyo’s wish list would be to have more video-editing equipment, understandably to continue to film more of Sakura’s exploits –and non-exploits- as a CardCaptor.
Tomoyo's favorite food is soba (buckwheat) noodles, and sushi. Her least favorite food would be green peppers. She also enjoys Italian dishes as well. Tomoyo's favorite colors are beige and white. Her two favorite classes are Japanese and Music; she doesn't have a class that she would consider her least favorite. She is a part of the choir and her blood type is A. Tomoyo's favorite flowers are magnolia and cherry blossoms (otherwise known as Sakura.) Her birthday is on September 3rd.
Tomoyo's Personality- Tomoyo is quite mature for her age. She’s kind, caring, highly intelligent, beautiful and melodious. Tomoyo has a very talented singing voice and has solos in choir recitals. When it’s needed, Tomoyo has shown cunning and resourcefulness. Tomoyo’s also helped Sakura out more than once so she could be close to Yukito-when she originally had feelings for him-and then helped out Syaoran Li when he realized that he was falling in love with Sakura. However, a major part of Tomoyo’s personality is her selflessness regarding Sakura. She’s never once shown jealousy, resentment or any other negative emotions toward the ones who Sakura had feelings for. Tomoyo is happy, no matter whom Sakura loves. Tomoyo is slightly over the top at times, however it’s seen only when Sakura is directly involved. Tomoyo once stated to Sakura that she would be very thrilled if the person she loved actually loved her back, but the only thing that matters to her is the person’s happiness.
Sakura, not having a clue that the person Tomoyo is talking about is herself, replied back as such: “The person you care about must REALLY be happy then!”
(Sakura was transported to a world where everyone forgets their feelings toward the people they love most in the 46th episode of CardCaptor Sakura. As she does every day, she greets Tomoyo in her usual friendly manner but instead of the two of them continuing on with a conversation Tomoyo changed her shoes and walked away! She only stopped long enough to tell Sakura that they would be late for class. As the day went on and their classes continued, Tomoyo wasn’t hanging out with Sakura like she normally would and didn’t greet her when Sakura’s cheerleading classes ended. This alone shows that Tomoyo cares about Sakura more than anyone else, similar to how her mother Sonomi cares about Nadeshiko.)
Tomoyo also speaks using formal verb conjugations and expressions, which gives her a unique air of refinement throughout the series. (Tomoyo’s previously mentioned cunning and resourcefulness was shown quite well in the final movie – where she had devised a complicated scheme/idea to give Sakura many chances to confess to Syaoran how she felt. In the manga, she gave her a few pieces of advice: that only she could know what was in her heart, and that the answer was inside her; Sakura just needed a chance to figure it out for herself.) When it comes to the costumes she makes for Sakura, Tomoyo makes sure they revolve around particular themes; during Sakura’s second attempt to catch the Fly card, with her first attempt not working out so well, the theme of her battle costume was dedicated to wings. The day before Valentine’s Day, Tomoyo had incorporated a heart motif into her battle costume; once, when Sakura had gotten drenched while wearing Tomoyo’s handmade costume, the latter had suspected that might happen so she made the former an even flashier outfit! (Kero even stated it was flashier than the one Sakura was currently wearing at the time!) One of Sakura’s earlier costumes even represented the season of spring.

Tomoyo's Abilities- Tomoyo doesn’t have any magical abilities like Sakura or Li, but she’s got a knack for designing clothes and may one day grow up to be either a fashion designer or-possibly-a director. She’s designed all of Sakura’s battle costumes before and ever since she realized that Sakura was the CardCaptor, though Sakura herself isn’t entirely thrilled when it comes to wearing the costumes. She approves of how well Tomoyo makes them, however. Tomoyo has also taken it upon herself to film every one of Sakura’s adventures as stated above-no matter whether she’s capturing cards or running a race, as shown in one of the early episodes of the CardCaptor Sakura anime; as with the battle costumes, Sakura isn’t entirely thrilled with Tomoyo taping her adventures since she’s supposed to keep her double life a secret. Tomoyo was unable to race herself but was very pleased at the fact that she would be able to tape the entire race-with Sakura as her only star.
Tomoyo’s also very good and adept at cooking; in the manga, she’s been shown to bake a cake, and personally made some homemade chocolates specifically for Sakura on Valentine’s Day.
